Canon Character Information
Appearance: When in her natural form, Raven's skin is completely blue. There are darker blue patches on her skin that feel roughly skin like, if perhaps a bit smoother. Her hair is a dark red. The sclera of her eyes are yellow, while the pupils and irises are black. When in her human form, she has somewhat pale skin, blonde curly hair a little longer than shoulder-length, and gray eyes. In either form, she looks closer to mid-twenties than her true age.
History: Raven's history at Wikia, Apocalypse history not included in Raven's wiki; Note: I follow the Rogue Cut of Days of Future past (so she stops and destroys Cerebro instead of going straight to DC) and headcanon a relationship with Azazel that led to the birth of Kurt, as per comic canon. She gave him up for adoption because she felt her life was no place for a child.
Personality: Raven has struggled with her identity, it seems, for her entire life. There was the stage before she met Charles where she was always a different person. She was whoever she needed to be in order to survive because she'd long since learned, a heavy weight for a nine-year-old, that her own form was unloveable. And then she snuck into one particular house in Westchester, New York and found herself someone who thought her form was fascinating instead of frightening. Who invited her to create a family neither of them had really had.
Charles' acceptance might have prevented Raven from coming to hate herself, but it was also the beginning of a wedge between them that would only grow over the years. He gave her the confidence to be herself, but asked her to hide herself. It may have been sense to Charles, but it felt like shame to Raven. Over the years, that wedge would only grow, built by both conventional and not-so-conventional things.
First was the difference in their academic aspirations. Raven had never been one for school and Charles was just the opposite. It was never more apparent to her than when he was out having a drink at one of the pubs his Oxford friends frequented. She was the one out of place. The lone waitress in a sea of future world-changers. Charles himself never made her feel she'd made a wrong decision about school, of course, but the rest of the world did its best to slowly push the two a part.
But Charles was his own problem. From the moment he took her in and claimed her as his own, he treated her as his little sister. Raven, who had never felt that kind of love, reveled in the feeling. And then puberty hit and her affection toward him morphed into something less fraternal. He was her white knight, the boy who had saved her from the cruelties of the world. So Raven did what she thought best: she forced the even further apart by demanding he stay out of her head. She knew where he stood. She was his sister, end of story. She couldn't stand to be the one to make things change between them when things had been so good even though she was the one who had first put the wall between them. It was another reason why the college years were so hard. He was out there finding connections with all the women he met when all she wanted was to be that person he found a connection with.
And then Erik appeared in their lives, the push that Raven needed to break the paradigm she and Charles had created for each other. He was everything she needed in the moment. A man who wanted her to be herself and not the image she had carefully crafted over the years. Herself and not Charles' sister. He didn't suggest that she hide in his shadow but demanded that she shed the false skin. And, when she left with him, he also provided her an outlet for her anger against everyone who had made her feel as if being who or what she was, whether it was waitress or mutant, was less than what they were.
For almost a year, she depended on Erik as much as she had Charles. He was her rock. He built up her confidence and reminded her that she was worthy. But she wasn't ever truly independent. She was part of a team, his team, and subject to his orders. It wasn't until he was arrested that she was finally forced to act truly for herself. She was forced to rely on no one but herself. They were some of the hardest years of her life. She had a team, at least for a time, but she was the one giving the orders. And, like the war that was brewing in the world outside, a war was building within mutantkind. One where those nearest to her were taken, experimented on, and killed.
Now it wasn't just the ghost of Erik's battle, it was one personal to Raven. More than that, it wasn't just the general disgust for what humans could do to each other and the potential for what they could do to mutants. It was the very real dangers they were facing from someone out to persecute them, Erik's nightmare scenario come to life. Over the years, every new friend or lover who was taken from her made her grow ever more bitter. She was faced with the same situation Erik had been in all those years ago and she made the same choice: kill the man responsible for her pain. Kill him and end the suffering for her people.
It wasn't until she was faced with Erik himself that she finally recognized the difference between them. Nine years and her own pain was enough to forget that he'd been planning to start his own war. By the time she met him again, she was tired of war. She'd planned on making a single, surgical strike to end the war. She wanted to retreat and lick her wounds. But Erik, after years of captivity simply for trying to save a mutant, wanted to start another one. In the end, she sided not with Charles but against Erik. Charles' ideal world where mutants and humans could live together in peace didn't exist, but she refused to believe that war was the only answer. War held only death.
Another ten years passed. Some went into hiding and others flourished. Raven turned from a leader into a lone wolf. She might have been tired of the war, but there were still battles to fight, still mutants to be saved. From the outside, it might have seemed as if she was fundamentally the same, but one of her core beliefs, that of herself, had changed once again. Once she was a mutant and proud, but time had numbed that belief. She was a mutant and she no longer rejected that, but she wasn't proud. Instead of using her ability to her advantage or forcing her mutation in someone's face, she simply conformed. She was, in an ironic twist of events, fitting in much the way Charles had wanted her to from the very beginning.
Like he had the first time, Erik changed this again. This time, he was the lost soul who needed her to guide him out of the darkness. In doing so, she was forced to confront a generation of children who looked up to her. Who treated her not as a friend or general but as a mentor. And she was forced to confront Charles again. With so many years apart, she wasn't his little sister anymore. She was simply, she hoped, a friend. With Hank, a man who had gone through his own journey of self-acceptance, she decided to form a team. Its mission was one that resonated with her. Neither Charles' optimistic view nor Erik's pessimistic one, it was instead something of both: hope for the best but prepare for the worst. She would never again be caught flat-footed like she had with Trask, but she would also never be lost to her demons.
Who is Raven? A woman, a mutant, who has survived self-doubt, demons both real and imagined, and war. All of it has changed her, but it's also provided her with a mission. Provide a better and a safer world for the children who had grown up to idolize her. Be proactive but not brutal. And maybe the next generation would get it right.
